Deric Dickens is a Brooklyn-based percussionist and composer. After growing up in Southern Georgia, Deric worked as a band director, taught drum and bugle corps, and played as a principal timpanist with local orchestras and symphonies. But it was the ride cymbal, a friend had asked him to play at a session, that changed everything. Since, Dickens has toured and recorded with Robinella (Columbia Records) and JaLaLa (Janis Siegel Manhattan Transfer). Deric has performed numerous times with Donald Brown, Jerry Coker, Joe Fiedler, Kirk Knuffke, and Jeff Lederer at various clubs and festivals including Birdland, 55 Bar, Bonnaroo, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, Atlas Performing Arts, Knoxville Jazz Festival, Litchfield Jazz Festival, GDS Jazz Fsetival, and The Muroran Jazz Festival Japan. He currently leads his groups Speed Date, Rocket #9, The Dickens Campaign, and Left Bomb Bay and co leads Dix Out (avant Trad. Band), Team Players, and Arabic for Beginners with Lena Bloch.

Deric was recently runner up in Drum Magazines 2014 Drummie awards in the Rising Star category and his album Oh Lovely Appearance was featured as a Best Of For Summer Listening by The Guardian UK.  2015 was a busy year with 4 albums and many tours plus a 3 day residency at Ibeam Brooklyn, where Deric brought in 8 different bands.  2016 is proving to be even crazier with a lot of side man work and a release of a second Dickens Campaign album and at least 4 tours already on the books.

Along with playing, Deric is still committed to educating and facilitating creativity in and through music. Through his private studio in NYC and his regular appearances as a guest clinician or Artist in Residence at high schools, music studios, and music stores.

Deric Dickens endorses Promark Drum Sticks and Mallets, Sabian Cymbals, and has been lucky enough to do much of the early testing and design of the Evans 56 Calftone drum head and something even newer that will knock your socks off.
